Lanzarote’s Taxi Dilemma: A Call for Immediate Action
As the festive season approaches, Lanzarote, a beloved destination for British tourists, is grappling with a pressing issue that threatens to mar the holiday experience. The island’s tourism leaders are sounding the alarm over a shortage of taxi services, particularly at César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport, which could leave visitors stranded and frustrated.
Impact on Tourism and Local Businesses
The Lanzarote Tourism Federation (FTL) has expressed grave concerns about the inadequate taxi services, which are crucial for both tourists and residents. Susana Pérez, president of FTL and Asolan, emphasized the importance of a positive first impression for holidaymakers arriving on the island. The lack of available taxis has already led to numerous complaints, particularly in popular tourist areas like Yaiza, where long waits are causing visitors to cancel reservations at restaurants and hotels.
The Christmas Crunch
The situation is expected to worsen during the Christmas holidays, a peak period for the island’s tourism industry. British tourists, who make up a significant portion of Lanzarote’s visitors, flock to the island to escape the winter gloom. The FTL has urged the Lanzarote Cabildo’s Department of Transport to implement measures to prevent a transportation crisis during this critical time.
Proposed Solutions and Future Outlook
One proposed solution is the introduction of a joint taxi service, allowing vehicles from all municipalities to operate at the airport. This change could help meet the growing demand and reduce the environmental impact by minimizing empty return trips. Additionally, the FTL has requested increased passport control staff at the airport to alleviate congestion, especially for families with young children.
The Lanzarote Cabildo and the Spanish government have been approached for comments and potential actions to address these issues. As the island prepares for the influx of holidaymakers, the hope is that swift measures will be taken to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience for all visitors.
