The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has also updated its travel advice, urging travelers to follow local safety recommendations.

Travelers are advised to avoid ports and areas with high landslide risks, such as Amoudi, Armeni, Korfos, and the Old Port in Fira. In the event of a strong tremor, it is recommended to move away from coastal areas immediately. Local authorities have designated gathering points in Santorini’s main town of Fira as a precautionary measure for potential evacuations.

Prominent seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos has noted that the current pattern of earthquakes could indicate a larger event on the horizon. While these are tectonic rather than volcanic quakes, the risk level has increased. Despite the uncertainty, Santorini’s Mayor Nikos Zorzos emphasizes the importance of preparedness without causing unnecessary panic. He reassures residents and visitors that while preparations are necessary, they do not guarantee that a major event will occur.
