Unlock Europe: How Young Travelers Can Score a Free Rail Pass This Summer

DiscoverEU Initiative: A Gateway to European Exploration

This summer, young Europeans have a unique opportunity to explore the continent without breaking the bank, thanks to the DiscoverEU initiative. The European Union, in collaboration with Interrail, is offering nearly 36,000 free rail passes to 18-year-olds. This initiative aims to foster cultural exchange and understanding among young Europeans by allowing them to travel across the continent.

Eligibility and Application Process

To qualify for this exciting opportunity, applicants must be born between July 1, 2006, and June 30, 2007. The program is open to legal residents of the 27 EU member states and certain associated countries, including Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, and Türkiye. Interested individuals can apply by visiting the European Youth Portal, where they will need to complete an eligibility quiz. This quiz consists of five multiple-choice questions about the EU and one additional question about their travel plans. The answers to these questions will determine the ranking of applicants, with passes awarded based on this ranking.

Travel Details and Benefits

Successful applicants will receive a rail pass valid for up to 30 days of travel between July 1, 2025, and September 30, 2026. Participants can choose to travel alone or with a group of up to five friends. The pass allows for travel within the applicant’s country of residence for one outbound and one inbound journey, with the requirement to visit at least one other eligible country. The pass is valued at up to €283.26 for second or economy class travel, with additional allowances for those traveling from remote regions. In some cases, coach and ferry passes may also be included, and flights may be provided for those in isolated areas.

Becoming a DiscoverEU Ambassador

In exchange for the free rail pass, participants are encouraged to become DiscoverEU Ambassadors. This involves sharing their travel experiences on social media or through presentations in schools and communities. Additionally, travelers will complete an online survey after their journey and receive a certificate highlighting the skills and competencies gained. Participants will also receive a European Youth Card, offering discounts on cultural activities, transportation, and more across the EU.

The DiscoverEU initiative not only provides a cost-effective way for young people to explore Europe but also promotes cultural understanding and personal growth. With applications open from April 2 to April 16, 2025, eligible young Europeans are encouraged to seize this opportunity to embark on an unforgettable journey.
