Crans-Montana: A Swiss Ski Resort Transformed into a Street Art Haven

The Birth of a Unique Art Festival

In the picturesque Valais Alps of Switzerland lies Crans-Montana, a ski resort that has become an unexpected canvas for street artists from around the globe. The transformation began in 2014 when Gregory Pages, an art dealer, envisioned turning the resort’s stark concrete structures into vibrant works of art. This idea sparked the creation of the Vision Art Festival (VAF), which has since become a celebrated annual event.

A Global Gathering of Artists

The inaugural festival in 2015 saw a dozen artists from various backgrounds come together to paint the resort’s walls. Since then, the festival has grown significantly, with over 160 artists contributing to more than 200 murals scattered across the resort. Each July, artists gather to create new pieces, turning the resort into a dynamic gallery that evolves with each passing year.

Art in the Heart of Nature

Creating art in the mountainous terrain of Crans-Montana presents unique challenges. Artists work at altitudes between 1,500 and 3,000 meters, often requiring long hikes to reach their canvases. Despite these challenges, the natural beauty of the surroundings inspires artists, resulting in works that reflect the local environment and wildlife.

Engaging the Community

The Vision Art Festival is not just for tourists; it actively involves the local community. In 2022, nearly 1,000 schoolchildren participated in creating new artworks, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in the festival. The festival’s success is evident in the overwhelming interest from artists worldwide, with around 400 applications received annually.

Visitors can explore the art through an interactive street art map, available for guided tours on foot, ski, or e-bike. This unique blend of art and nature has made Crans-Montana a year-round destination, attracting art enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.
